There are 25 “Art the Box” installations in Richmond County; these are Traffic Signal Control Cabinets (TSCCs) that have been transformed into four-sided street murals by local artists. They need a little TLC with soapy water, sponges, maybe a little scrub brush here and there. We would also like an up close assessment of their condition at each site. We would love to have teams of volunteers who would take a photo of the boxes prior to cleaning to document their condition, give them a wash, taking a few photos of that process, then take another photo of each side after the cleaning for documentation, and write down an assessment of the condition of the paintings after cleaning. Based on this work, we will confer with City of Augusta Traffic Engineering on any further maintenance needed.

Additional Supplies Needed: Per team: bucket, liquid soap, water, sponges, scrub brush, latex (or other) gloves, camera (on a phone is fine), paper and writing implement. We recommend bringing sun screen, hats, drinking water.

Inclement Weather Plan: Not at this time. If the AU Day of Service volunteers would be willing to perform this work on a rain date, we would be there to coordinate.

Restrictions: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Parents are welcome to bring their children along to help in the fun, but some of the Art the Box installations are near busy intersections, and guardians would be solely responsible for the safety of any and all children brought along.

The Greater Augusta Arts Council was founded in 1968 by the Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce, the Junior Women’s Club, and the Junior League of Augusta to serve as an umbrella organization for the arts in the CSRA. The mission of the Greater Augusta Arts Council is to enrich the quality of life for citizens and visitors in Augusta and the Central Savannah River Area by advancing vibrant cultural arts. We strive to promote Augusta’s vibrant arts community by offering support for artists and arts organizations, and abundant and inclusive access to the arts for everyone.
