Charted in 1965, Historic Augusta is a private, nonprofit membership-based organization dedicated to the preservation of the historic built environment of Augusta and Richmond County, Georgia. Our mission is accomplished in many ways, including identifying significant historic resources in the community, educating the general public about their importance, and assisting others in preserving historic resources. We work with local, state and federal government to protect historic buildings, sites, and districts. In some cases we assist in the sale of historic buildings to preservation minded owners, and in rare instances we take title to endangered historic properties until a plan for their preservation can be secured. Historic Augusta seeks volunteers to assist in the restoration of a 1911 children’s playhouse, built by the Rev. Joseph Ramsey Sevier, Pastor of First Presbyrterian Church from 1911 until 1925 for his children, Virginia and John. It was built in the backyard of the Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson, a National Historic Landmark, but was later moved next door to Historic Augusta’s office headquarters, as it is not period appropriate to the time when the Wilson’s lived in the house. The playhouse was fully restored in 2011, but after 8 years there is some weathering that needs to be touched up. Day of Service volunteers will help us give this playhouse, which is still used and beloved by children today, a fresh coat of paint. If enough volunteers are available, we could also use help sprucing up the nearby garden, located in the backyard of the Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson.

Additional Supplies Needed: All paint, paint brushes, rollers, and general supplies, as well as drinks, will be provided by Historic Augusta. We suggest volunteers bring their own gloves.

Inclement Weather Plan: The project will be cancelled or rescheduled in the event of rain.

Restrictions: Volunteers must be at least 10 years old. All minors must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Founded in 1965, Historic Augusta’s mission is to protect and preserve historically and architecturally significant sites and structures in Augusta and Richmond County, Georgia.
